Using RescueTime with VMWare, Parallels, Other Virtual Systems, or Remote Desktop
You can set up RescueTime to track your activity in both your main operating system (host OS) and your virtual machine (VM).
- Install RescueTime on your primary (host) OS and make sure it's working correctly.
- Start your virtual OS using VMWare or Parallels, then install RescueTime inside the virtual OS as well.
- Verify that RescueTime is working normally in the virtual OS.
Important:
With RescueTime running on both systems, you’ll see double reporting when you use the virtual OS. That’s because your host OS will count the time spent in VMWare or Parallels while your virtual OS reports the specific activities.
To fix this, you’ll need to tell RescueTime on your host OS to ignore the virtual machine app (like VMWare or Parallels):
- Go to your Apps & Websites report.
- Find VMWare, Parallels, or the virtual machine app listed.
- Hover over its name, click the edit icon, and choose Ignore this activity forever.
