Using RescueTime with an unsupported browser
Tracking websites in unsupported browsers
RescueTime automatically tracks time spent on websites when you use a supported browser.
If you’re using an unsupported (or partially supported) browser, you may still be able to track websites by using a browser extension and adjusting a few settings.
Important:
- This workaround is only for unsupported browsers
- It does not apply to Chrome, which is fully supported by the desktop app
- The RescueTime extension is not maintained for Chrome and cannot be used with it
macOS: Chromium-based browsers
If you’re using a Chromium-based browser (such as Vivaldi or Opera) on macOS, you’ll also need to enable Automation permissions.
- Open System Settings
- Go to Privacy & Security
- Select Automation
- Expand RescueTime
- Enable your browser
You’ll usually be prompted to allow this the first time you use the browser while RescueTime is running.
Set up website tracking with a browser extension
For unsupported browsers, follow these steps:
1. Install the extension
Install the RescueTime browser extension that matches your browser’s codebase:
- Chromium-based browsers → Chrome extension
- Firefox-based browsers → Firefox extension
2. Sign in to the extension
Sign in using your RescueTime account.
When prompted, leave this box unchecked:
- “I’m already using the full RescueTime application on this computer.”
This allows the extension to track website activity for that browser.
3. Prevent duplicate tracking
To avoid recording the same time twice:
- Open your Apps & Websites report
- Find your browser listed as a general activity (e.g., “Vivaldi,” “Opera,” “Waterfox”)
- Click the edit icon next to it
- Select Ignore this activity forever
This ensures:
- The extension tracks individual websites
- The desktop app does not track the browser as a single block of time
Limitations
This workaround does not support Focus Sessions. Websites in unsupported browsers will not be blocked during a Focus Session.
