Enabling Website Tracking on MacOS

Not seeing websites in your reports on Mac?

If you’re using macOS and don’t see websites listed in your RescueTime reports, it’s usually because the required Accessibility and Automation permissions aren’t enabled yet. These permissions let RescueTime read the window titles of the apps and websites you visit—so your reports can include website details.

To fix this and enable website tracking:

Just follow the steps below to grant RescueTime the necessary permissions.

Note: RescueTime never has control over your computer. These permissions are only used to read window titles, not to take actions or control apps.

How to Enable Accessibility Permissions on macOS

During the installation process, you are typically prompted to enable these permissions.

You can also view or change them at any time by following these steps:

  1. Click the Apple icon and select System Settings.

  2. Choose Privacy & Security > Accessibility

  3. Enable RescueTime in the list under "Allow the applications below to control your computer".
  4. If RescueTime is not on the list, click on the " +" button.

  5. Choose RescueTime from the list of applications.

When the Accessibility permissions are enabled, RescueTime will have the capability to track the websites visited.

How to Enable Automation Permissions on macOS

Open    System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation > RescueTime

Enable all the web browsers you want RescueTime to track.

Install the RescueTime Firefox Extension on macOS

If you use Firefox on macOS, you'll need to install the RescueTime Firefox Extension. Please ensure you sign in with the same RescueTime account on the browser extension as your desktop app.
