Android - Install from APK

The version of RescueTime from Google Play will not support call tracking due to Google policies. If you want call tracking, or if your Android device does not have the Play Store installed, you must install RescueTime directly from the APK.

The APK is exactly the same binary application that is served in the Play Store, but with Call Tracking permissions enabled.

Android disables APK installation by default for security reasons. You need to enable installation from unknown sources. How to do that varies by Android version:

Android 5, 6, and 7

  1. Go to Menu > Settings > Security > and check Unknown Sources to allow your phone to install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store.
  2. Open a web browser on your Android device and download the RescueTime APK file
  3. You might need to grant storage permission to your browser in order to save the file.
  4. Open the downloaded file by tapping on it.
  5. Click Install when prompted.
  6. (Optional) After RescueTime is installed you can disable the unknown-app installation permission for better security. Go to Menu > Settings > Security and uncheck Unknown Sources.

Android 8 and 9

  1. Open a web browser on your Android device and download the RescueTime APK file
  2. You might need to grant storage permission to your browser in order to save the file.
  3. Open the downloaded file by tapping on it.
  4. You will be prompted for permission to let your browser install unknown apps. Grant it.
  5. Click Install when prompted.
  6. (Optional) After RescueTime is installed you can disable the unknown-app installation permission for better security. Go to Menu > Settings > Apps & Notifications > Advanced (Special app access) > Install unknown apps and disable the browser that you previously enabled.
