Focus Zones: How RescueTime Finds Your Best Time to Focus
A Focus Zone is a window of time that RescueTime identifies as ideal for deep, focused work.
Focus Zones show up in your Morning Forecast so you can plan your day around them, and appear as an alert in the Assistant when one begins. You can optionally have distracting sites blocked automatically during Focus Zones without needing to start a session manually.
How Focus Zones are calculated
RescueTime looks for windows of at least one uninterrupted hour during your work day and uses two inputs to identify them:
💡 Connecting your calendar gives RescueTime real scheduling context and produces more accurate Focus Zones. Connect yours at Account Settings → Calendar Integrations.
How Focus Zones appear
Morning Forecast
At the start of your workday, the Assistant shows your Morning Forecast: a summary of your scheduled meetings and your Focus Zones for the day, labeled as Focus Opportunities. This gives you a map of your best windows for deep work.
Alert during the zone
When a Focus Zone begins, a yellow alert appears at the top of the Assistant. It shows the zone duration and includes a Start a Focus Session button so you can put that window to use immediately.
Block page (if Focus Zone blocking is enabled)
If you've enabled Focus Zone blocking in your settings, visiting a distracting site during a zone takes you to the Focus Zone block page instead. You can choose to start a Focus Session, continue to the site anyway, or turn off blocking for this zone.
Focus Zone settings
Configure Focus Zones at Account Settings → Focus Settings.
💡 These two settings work independently. You can get alerts without enabling blocking, and you can enable blocking without alerts. The Focus Zone alert setting is also accessible from Account Settings → Notifications → Focus Zone Alert; both controls stay in sync.
Focus Zones vs. Focus Sessions
Focus Zones and Focus Sessions are related but different things:
- A Focus Zone is a suggested window of time for deep work, identified by RescueTime based on your calendar and patterns.
- A Focus Session is an active blocking session you start intentionally. It enforces focus by blocking distracting sites for a set duration.
Focus Zones tell you when to focus. Focus Sessions are how you do it. They are designed to work together. When a Focus Zone begins, the alert includes the option to start a Focus Session so you can immediately act on the opportunity.
